Why Endurance Athletes Should Track Their Training Data

Tracking your training turns fitness from a feeling into a trend: workload (CTL), fatigue (ATL), and form (TSB) show when to push and when to rest — and most athletes need only duration, RPE, and one intensity metric to start.

Fitness, fatigue, and form: the core model

Modern tracking boils down to three numbers: chronic training load (CTL, your ~6-week average workload — a fitness proxy), acute training load (ATL, your ~1-week workload — a fatigue proxy), and the difference between them (TSB, your form). Push CTL up slowly, let ATL swing, and schedule key sessions when TSB is positive. The same model works for runners and triathletes — pace-based load scores exist for every endurance sport.

You do not need to worship these numbers — they are crude models of a complex body — but they beat memory. The athlete who knows they are at CTL 70 with TSB +15 makes different decisions than the one who assumes they are probably fine.

Spotting overtraining early

Overreaching announces itself in data before it announces itself in your legs: resting heart rate rising 5+ bpm above baseline for several days, HRV trending down, sleep degrading, and power or pace at a given heart rate falling. Any two of those together for a week is a signal to cut volume 40–50% and sleep.

This is where tracking pays for itself: one avoided month of deep fatigue is worth more than any single workout. The athletes who break are usually the ones whose data said stop for two weeks — and who kept training.

Feelings still count

Data disciplines feelings; it does not replace them. Track RPE alongside everything else — if a session rated easy feels like threshold three days running, something is wrong regardless of what TSS says.

The best trackers hold both truths: numbers for direction, perception for fine adjustment. Neither alone catches everything.
