Gear ratio = chainring ÷ cog. Gear inches scale that by wheel diameter (penny-farthing heritage). Development is meters rolled per pedal turn. Gain ratio divides by crank length so different crank sizes stay comparable. Speed = development × cadence.

What is a bike gear ratio?
Gear ratio is chainring teeth divided by cog teeth. A 50×11 gear is 4.55 — the rear wheel turns 4.55 times per pedal revolution. Higher ratios are harder and faster; lower ratios are easier for climbing.
What are gear inches?
Gear inches equal gear ratio × wheel diameter in inches. They let you compare gears across different wheel and tire sizes. A typical road climbing gear is around 30–40″; a big sprint gear can exceed 110″.
What is meters of development?
Development (rollout) is how many meters the bike travels for one full pedal turn. It is the metric counterpart to gear inches: ratio × wheel circumference. Racers often quote development when comparing setups.
How do I choose a cassette range?
Match the easiest gear to your steepest climbs and fitness. Many road riders use 11-28 or 11-32; gravel and mountainous routes often need 11-34 or wider. Check that your rear derailleur’s max cog and total capacity (largest−smallest cog + largest−smallest chainring) can handle the cassette.
Why do some gears overlap?
On 2x and 3x drivetrains, different chainring/cog pairs can land within a few percent of the same ratio. Those near-duplicates feel almost identical and reduce how many truly distinct gears you have. This calculator flags overlaps within 3%.
