Accumulate endurance with 2 × 45-60 minute Zone 2 blocks, weekly sweet spot work, and back-to-back medium rides — total weekly time matters more than any single long ride, as long as event-specific long rides resume 8-10 weeks before a target event.
Endurance is built on total weekly time
Your aerobic system adapts to accumulated time in Zone 2, not to the existence of one hero ride. Six hours spread across the week builds the same base as six hours in one day — with far less recovery cost.
The long ride still has a role: fueling practice, position adaptation, and event specificity. But outside a 8-10 week event window, weekly totals drive endurance.
Mid-week endurance sessions that work
| Session | Duration | Zone | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Endurance block | 45-60 min | Z2 | Base miles without recovery cost |
| Sweet spot 2 × 20 | 60 min | Z3-Z4 | Time-efficient endurance stimulus |
| Endurance + tempo | 75-90 min | Z2 + Z3 | Aerobic volume with a stimulus bump |
| Back-to-back mediums | 2 × 90-120 min | Z2 | Cumulative fatigue without one huge day |
Sweet spot: the time-efficient endurance builder
Sweet spot sits just below threshold — hard enough to push aerobic development, easy enough to repeat 2-3 times weekly. Two 20-minute blocks inside an hour deliver a stimulus that would otherwise take two easy hours outdoors.
Pair it with genuinely easy riding: sweet spot plus easy Z2 is a base-building week; sweet spot plus more sweet spot is a burnout recipe.
Back-to-back medium rides
Two 2-hour rides on consecutive weekend days create much of the deep fatigue and fat-adaptation of a single 3.5-4 hour ride, while keeping each day manageable around family life.
Keep both rides Zone 2 and practice fueling on the second one — riding with partial glycogen from Saturday is the closest indoor-life simulation of a long ride.
